Welcoming the world at WMS

At The White Mountain School, all students from different cultures work with and learn from each other. This collaborative atmosphere is a tremendous advantage for international students as they are able to work with their peers from all over the world on a daily basis. International and domestic students are encouraged to communicate and work together in an array of diverse settings- in the dormitory, on the sports field, in Field Course classes and in all non-ESL sessions.

An intentionally small institution, The White Mountain School maximises the level of care and connection provided to each individual by cultivating personal, caring and committed relationships between students and staff. Our International Student Coordinator is on hand at all times to help international students and staff to understand and meet the needs of our global community.

Among the broad spectrum of courses available to our international students are:

  • International Student Orientation
  • American Conversation Mentors
  • School Vacations
  • College Counselling
  • Cultural Events on Campus
  • Visa Support

Outstanding ESL Support

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is a rigorous college-preparatory program that equips English language learners with the skills they need to excel in mainstream humanities and sciences classes. Participants solidify their comprehension of English by reviewing basic grammar, listening, reading and conversational skills, eventually learning how to write formal essays and analyse literature.

Third-level ESL students are aided in improving their reading, writing, analytical, critical thinking and discussion skills in preparation for their progression to English-speaking colleges and universities.

Each ESL teacher strives to nurture ESL students holistically by helping them to make connections with domestic students, supporting them emotionally as they adapt to life in the USA and encouraging them to discover new interests as they become active members of The White Mountain School community.
